Then _ Defence of the Ancients _ came out, and it was like that bomb never went off at all and was merely biding its time to truly cause mayhem. Assignments were forgotten. Midterms were missed. Some students stopped leaving their rooms, never to be seen again. To this day there are ghost stories of long lost undergrads, roaming the halls in search of food they’d forgotten to eat in life.

Fast forward a decade and a half and MOBAs (Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas for those not in the know) aren’t just killing academic careers - they’re at the very forefront of E-sports. All the biggest stables, like Fnatic, Team Liquid, and Cloud 9, all field teams that play in _ League of Legends _ , the biggest MOBA of them all.

While Blizzard (the makers of _ Warcraft III _ ) had their hand in giving birth to MOBAs as a genre, they’ve been strangely behind the times while MOBAs took the E-sports world by storm. And while _ League of Legends _ (or _ LoL _ for short) is still top dog, it has a lot to learn from Blizzard’s upstart [https://WWW.Mobanewshub.com/ MOBA game champions].

Here are 15 ways _ League of Legends _ is worse than _ Heroes Of The Storm _ .

15 A Toxic Community

via Kotaku

_ League of Legends _ is a big deal. At peak periods there can be over 7 million players on Riot’s servers. Having this many gamers playing at once can make policing player behaviour a little tricky. The result is a community that is famous for its snark, saltiness and general unfriendliness to new players - and that’s putting it lightly.

_ Heroes of the Storm _ , on the other hand, is managed by Blizzard, who take player experience very seriously. Not only is there a swear filter and a 'report player' feature that can get a player banned for such infractions as griefing, but in _ HotS, _ each team doesn’t even have the option to speak to their opposite in competitive matches. It’s hard to spew toxic vitriol when you can’t get through to the enemy team.

14 No Map Variations

via Heroes Of The Storm

_ League of Legends _ is also pretty famous for having a serious lack of map variety. _ LoL _ has one map, Summoner’s Rift, and if you don’t like it, that’s too bad. Go find another game.

_ Heroes of the Storm _ , on the other hand, has a colossal _ thirteen _ maps, each meticulously balanced to give each team a fair chance at victory. Each map has its own variations in terms of size, lane separation, and jungle encampments (called mercenary camps in _ HotS _ ) that all feel very different, making each game fresh and exciting.

This variation also makes certain heroes more attractive to play on certain maps. You may want to opt for global presence of Dehaka on larger maps, allowing you to quickly be where your team needs you during team-fights, no matter how far you wander. Or on maps with tighter lanes, you may go for a slower assassin like Valeera, who can roam around to get quick kills on unwary players.

13 Lack of Map Objectives

via Gamespot

On Summoner’s Rift, the objective is always the same - kill your opponents, push down their turrets, and then blow up their nexus. Just like the map itself, it’s the same game every time.

In _ Heroes of the Storm _ , things are a lot more interesting. Sure, there’s always the benefit of killing your opponents in giving your team experience, while depriving the other team of a crucial defender, but if you happen to be on the losing end of this scenario there’s usually an option besides killing your opponents to secure a victory. Each map will have its own objective, and if you can secure that objective before the enemy does it can lead to a massive, potentially game-changing advantage.

12 No Bots!

via LeagueOfLegends.com

"Bots?" You ask, "How can AI controlled bots be a good thing?"

Don’t get me wrong, human controlled players are usually best to play against in competitive games, but there are a few cases where having a bot can be a great thing.

Let’s take the issue of leavers. In _ League of Legends _ if somebody leaves their character sits there like a lump and does absolutely nothing. In _ Heroes of the Storm _ if a player leaves then their hero is taken over by computer AI and continues to fight. The AI isn’t perfect, and it won’t respond the same way a human player would in any given situation, but it’s a lot better than being a man down just because some jerk decided that their house burning down was more important than their _ LoL _ game.

_ League _ is in the process of developing computer AI for players to play against, but they’re still in the early alpha stages and are a long way off from having the same kind of extensive bots that _ HotS _ has.

11 XP Is Shared

via gamingcfq.com

This one is sure to get me some angry emails from _ LoL _ purists, but the fact that experience gained isn’t shared among the team can warp games into bizarre scenarios where one player is level 10 while the rest of the team is level 6, or even lower. It can be terribly disheartening to be playing a tank like Rammus, or a support like Janna, the best they’ve ever been played and still be down in experience compared to the more damage oriented champions.

In _ HotS _ experience is shared between the whole team, making each player on that team the same level as the next. If every member of the team is playing well, then the team’s level will reflect that, making every role important whether or not that role is particularly great at farming experience or not.

10 Carry Roles Suck

via aminoapps.com

Along with not having experience shared is another bizarre aspect of a team-based game - the carry role. _ League of Legends _ can reward a team that puts all their eggs in one basket, giving a champion with a high damage potential and the right item build the ability to completely dominate the late-game and "carry" their team to victory. The carry will inevitably end the game with much larger experience, and also tends to get a massively inflated ego while doing it.

Once again, _ HotS _ doesn’t have this problem due to the shared experience. There are certainly heroes that have a more potent role early on, or are more effective in the late game, but the role of the damage dealer is no more or less important than any other role on the team. Likewise, this helps to keep egos more in check in the Blizzard MOBA.

9 Character Balance

via stillglass.deviantart.com

There’s one thing I will always give _ League _ over _ HotS: _ they have a massive roster of champions. At 134 and growing, players have way more selection in _ League _ to pick a champion that best fits their playstyle.

That massive roster has its downsides, as it’s nearly impossible to balance a game with that many characters. Of the 134 champions available, only 23 see pick rates above 10% in competitive matches. That’s less than 20% of the roster being considered viable.

_ Heroes _ may have a much smaller roster, but the developers clearly care more about making each one of them viable with the number of patches they release. Of the 64 heroes available, 43 have a pick rate higher than 10% in competitive games - that’s fully two-thirds of the hero roster, and way more than can be found in _ League of Legends _ .

8 Who’s Who?

via Heroes of the Storm.com

That massive champion roster can be pretty hard to keep track of not just for the developers, but also for the players. Remembering what each of the 134 champions can do is a huge barrier for new players who can easily be ganked by a champion they’ve never seen before.

A smaller roster, like one found in _ Heroes of the Storm _ , makes it much easier to remember what your opponent can do, making it much better experience for new players. Not only that, but each hero is taken from previous Blizzard titles like _ Overwatch _ or _ World of Warcraft _ , giving each character a powerful, built-in backstory for a new player to identify with.

That’s not to say there isn’t a backstory for League champions. It’s there, you just have to dig for it.

7 Games Are Too Damned Long

via LeagueMath.com

There’s a reason why the majority of my gaming is done as a single player - I need a pause button. My life rarely goes longer than 15-20 minutes before my dog starts puking or something catches fire and needs my immediate attention.

In _ League of Legends _ , the average game lasts over half an hour, which is just too much time for me to invest. Some games can even go on into hour long odysseys that defy logic and explanation.

_ Heroes of the Storm _ doesn’t have that problem. If one team is getting particularly stomped, games can be over in as little as 10 minutes. Most games last about 20 minutes, with only the rare match reaching the 30-minute mark. This makes it much easier for me to put out the kitchen fire and still be back in time for my next game.

6 So Many Items!

via League of Legends.com

I want you to guess how many items there are in _ League of Legends _ . Go ahead - throw out a number!

If you guessed 221, then you cheated and went to the _ League of Legends _ website just like I did.

If 134 champions is too many to keep track of then, 221 items is also going to be a headache. I’ll cop to the fact that _ LoL _ does have an item suggestion prompt that gives new players a handy tip as to what item they should be purchasing, but the fact that such a feature is even necessary is not something to applaud.

In _ HotS _ , item purchases are simple: there aren’t any. That’s right - not a single item can be purchased in game. Instead, _ Heroes of the Storm _ uses a talent based system to give each character some build diversity that would normally be provided by items. It’s a lot simpler to understand and doesn’t require the player to leave the game for a moment to go buy stuff.

5 Comeback Mechanics!

via youtube.com/user/canastaR18

Everyone loves a good comeback. I’m not talking about taunts or verbal barbs - I’m talkin’ about the underdog rising up from a losing scenario to snatch victory from the jaws of certain defeat.

Both games certainly have mechanics baked in that allow for one team to come back from a stomping, but how they do it differs. Whereas _ HotS _ has a system that exponentially provides less experience the further down the opposing team is in terms of levels (until even hero kills are worth less experience than killing a mere minion), _ LoL _ has a cap at 20% experience for each champion kill achieved.

When you’re behind the entire game, that 20% cap can feel like an insurmountable cliff. Farming the opposing team for kills is always worthwhile in _ League _ , making a comeback far less likely.

4 Last Hits Are Dumb!

via ELOHell.net

When _ Defense of the Ancients _ was first inventing the MOBA genre, the only way to get experience or gold was to be the last guy putting damage on something to secure the kill. If you missed your attack and some minion stole your kill, you get nothing even if you did 99% of the damage. Thus the concept of "last hit" was born, and remained a staple of the genre for a long time.

Eventually, players and developers alike realized this last hit business was stupid and changed things so that simply being present when a minion expires nets you that sweet, sweet XP. However, in _ League _ an artifact of the last hit era remained in gold farming. If you’re not the last thing hitting a minion, you get no gold, and that’s dumb.

As you likely have already guessed, _ HotS _ doesn’t have this problem because there’s no gold (at least, not in a match - there is gold to buy heroes, but that’s done in menus). You don’t even need to be the agent of destruction in order to ensure your team keeps accruing experience. In fact, certain heroes specialize in this behaviour, which is super weird. More on that later.

3 Team Fights Are Fun!

via PixelDynamo.com

There’s no question that the most exciting part of any [https://WWW.Mobanewshub.com/ MOBA game skins] experience is the team fights. When all 5 players on a team come together and let loose, it’s like watching a fireworks display that eventually leads to a lot of dead players. Sort of like Victoria Day in my high school years.

One game has way more team fights than the other, and that’s _ Heroes of the Storm _ . In _ HotS _ maps usually, have objectives that will bring teams into conflict within the first 5 minutes. _ League _ doesn’t have that, and it’s even possible to have entire games where the only kills are solo-lane ganks that eventually result in death timers so long there isn’t even a climactic final battle at the enemy’s core.

That’s almost as disappointing as a Victoria Day without a fatality.

2 Hero Variation

via gosugamers.net

I know I kinda go back to this a lot, but with 134 champions it can not only be hard to balance them all, but it can also be hard to make them unique. A lot of _ League _ heroes tend to blend together, with only a slight variations to give them some originality.

By comparison, _ HotS _ seems like a cultural melting pot of play styles, each with their own set of unique abilities. There’s also some truly bonkers heroes, like Abathur who never actually engages in direct combat, or Cho’Gall, the two headed ogre that is literally two players in one body. Or how about The Lost Vikings who’re like trying to play three tiny heroes at once?

The innovation seen in _ Heroes of the Storm _ leaves _ LoL _ in the dust.

1 The Early Game Sucks

via League of Legends.com

Let’s go over the first 5 minutes of every _ League _ game: I waddle to my lane, micromanage my dude to get that all important last hit to farm gold, and I make sure I don’t push too close to a turret. Ho-hum.

Let’s do the same thing for Heroes of the Storm. I press z to mount my horse (so I can get to my lane quickly), and now I have to worry about a stealth characters ganking me while I push my lane up to the enemy tower to try and exhaust it before the object appears. Here's the best part: when that objective does appear I have to be ready for [https://WWW.Mobanewshub.com/ WWW.Mobanewshub.Com] a team fight.

Which one sounds more exciting to you? I thought so.

Likewise, this helps to keep egos more in check in the Blizzard [https://Www.Mobanewshub.com/ MOBA game tips].

When _ Defense of the Ancients _ was first inventing the [https://Www.Mobanewshub.com/ MOBA game champions] genre, the only way to get experience or gold was to be the last guy putting damage on something to secure the kill.

There’s no question that the most exciting part of any MOBA experience is the team fights.

Here's the best part: when that objective does appear I have to be ready for a team fight.

Which one sounds more exciting to you? I thought so.

I’ve never really liked soccer. Unfortunately, here in the UK, it’s a mainstay of our society — when two men meet for the first time, a usual topic of small talk would be something along the lines of ‘So, which team do you support?’ Usually I grit my teeth and mutter something popular: ‘Oh, Chelsea for sure. That Abramovich did some great things. Anyway, how about that swimming competition the other day?’

See, for me, sports are always best when they rely solely on an individual. You get to see the pain, the torment, the years-of-training, all build up to this one final event and, if they succeed, it’s a happiness that is unparalleled. Soccer is a team game — if you mess up, who cares? You’ve got ten other people to look after you.

Which is why I was unsure about reviewing Championship Manager 70s Legends for the iPhone. Its connection to soccer made it an unhappy prospect, and I went in with low expectations, praying I would complete it quickly, and move on with my life.

But then, as I played the game, I realized something — something that made me re-evaluate my outlook on the sport. As you take control of the manager, you really are being that individual sportsman. You are the guy that works hard and has to make the tough decisions. You are the guy whom, if you mess up, your whole team will lose. Without you, your team is nothing.

Starting Championship Manager 70s Legends is an incredibly daunting prospect. Clearly identifying its PC gaming heritage, it’s a game filled with menus, stats and far, far too many options. If you’re unfamiliar with the game’s setup, it can make you think: ‘Oh man, what on Earth do I do now?’

Randomly pointing at various options and hoping for the best, I pushed through the confusion and found myself taking control of Leeds, a team that I didn’t know much about. Again, the list of options was incredibly daunting. Who do I choose to make up my team? How do I train them? In which position should I have them play? I just wanted to get into a match and watch my team play, how on Earth was I supposed to know the rest of this stuff?

But again, it’s something that harkens back to the series’ PC roots. Whether or not games are ‘getting easier’ is not for me to say, but it’s undeniable that, once upon a time, PC games demanded a lot more trial-and-error on the part of the player. Setting my attackers to train in a forceful manner, my midfield in a passing-based manner, and my defenders to train in a manner that would have made a fisherman proud, I finally reached my first proper match.

Now, a little bit of context: I was playing Championship Manager 70s Legends in my local library. In a place where one can appreciate true peace-and-quiet, it was a perfect environment to play the game. After all, iPhones are supposed to be taken with you, wherever you go -- it is a mobile phone, after all -- and so when I finally had a few minutes to myself, I thought I'd take on Leeds' first match.

As soon as the [https://www.mobanewshub.com MOBA game tier list] started, I couldn’t help but squeal with joy as my team passed effectively, and scored their first ever goal under my command. 1-0. Hurrah, I cried! My first match, and I’m winning! This game is great! Five out of Five! Play resumed following my striker’s outstanding goal, and I became momentarily distracted by a pretty girl walking past.

I looked back at the screen. 1-1. What is this?! How did they score? Why? What on Earth is going on?! Half-time came, and I was invited to rearrange my team. I didn’t know what to do — as already mentioned, the game’s stats are incredibly confusing, and I was still reeling from having conceded a goal. I changed the team’s play style to ‘aggressive’, and started the second half.

Almost immediately, we lost another goal. 1-2. I just didn’t understand what I was doing wrong — why was the [https://www.mobanewshub.com moba game tournaments] punishing me for taking control of what was clearly the worst team in the league? Eventually, after many failed shots at goal, we lost the game. I was kicked back to the training menu, and I began to contemplate my next moves.

You see, Championship Manager 1970s Legends is not a perfect game. As a game designed for a portable device, it’s almost entirely terrible. With far too many menus and stats to keep track of, it requires thought, patience, and can’t be played in anything like the same manner as Angry Birds . But it is addictive. Even if, like me, you have no knowledge of 1970’s soccer players, you begin to form an attachment nonetheless. I soon realized that my top striker was a guy named Peter Lorimer, and so I began to put him in every game I played, and he always came out on top. Having now researched him on the internet, it’s clear that he was was a pretty darned good soccer player. That's another good thing about Legends , it doesn't require knowledge to play it, but it does encourage further research. To be quite honest however, I don’t care about the real Peter Lorimer. All I know is, he’s the best player on my team, and he’s going to win me the Championship, 70s style.

Should you buy Championship Manager 70s Legends ? Well, that depends. If you’re a soccer fan, and you’re prepared to face the initial steep learning curve, undoubtedly. It’s a great management title, filled with interesting trivia about the era, and provides a worthwhile challenge. If, like me, you’ve never enjoyed soccer… well, then it depends on your personality. If you’re easily frustrated by games that don’t hold your hand, then stay well clear. Although Legends offers an ‘Auto’ mode for most options, it’s still one that requires time, dedication and patience, and should be avoided by those without all three. If, like me, you get easily addicted and enjoy forming emotional attachments with video game characters… buy it. Just be prepared to give it a little time.

Championship Manager 70’s Legends is available now for all iOS compatible devices. For the purpose of this review, the game was played on an iPhone 3GS.

There was a time, when video game culture was still in its infancy, where it seemed every morning talk show had a segment about being appalled at video game violence. The platform was still not well understood, especially by those who had no interest in engaging in playing video games. Naturally, many mothers and political groups assumed that the violent themes and images in video games would encourage violent tendencies in those who played them. Their premise was ridiculous and repeatedly proven to be unfounded, but I think that is because they were looking at it the wrong way. It is not violent themes that encouraged hatred, the culprits were frustrating design and multiplayer-versus. There is a consensus on what the most toxic video game communities are. Something you’ll notice is that almost all these communities are multiplayer team game focused and League of Legends is somewhere on everybody’s list.

At any given point, half the players are losing and more than half are criticizing their team. Frustrations have reached a point, where just the sight of certain champions (whether on your team or the enemy team) is enough to send players into a rage spiral. Is it a self-fulfilling prophecy? Does the belief that you always do poorly against a certain champion ensure that you play poorly, since you’ve already resigned yourself to loss? Does the belief that certain champions (especially when challenging the meta by being in a different role) are useless to your team ensure that you won’t encourage that player or help them? The answer may be intangible and a complex combination, but in any case, here are the fifteen most hated League characters.

15 Teemo

(via riotgames.com)

He is the worst. The absolute, undisputed reincarnation of the Devil, in League of Legends . I hate him so much!

Alright, I’ve let that out of my system, I’m sorry, but just seeing his name sets me off. In fact, I hate him so much that I wanted to put him at fifteen to not give him the satisfaction of being number one. How can one character warrant so much hate? It is actually all in his design. Teemo’s kit is made specifically to frustrate the other team and not contribute to his own. He doesn’t synergize well with any other champions, he can’t peel, he’s not designed to tank, and he doesn’t spit out as much damage as other marksmen or mages can. Instead, he just contributes to frustrating deaths. The wasted flashes and dying to his poison, the dying to a mushroom he planted in your jungle five minutes earlier, and the dying while swinging and hitting nothing because he blinded you. These types of frustrations weigh on the enemy players and usually have them lashing out at their own team, which crumbles their ability to play together. This character is powered by how much we hate him.

14 Urgot

(via leagueoflegends.com)

Long forgotten by Riot, Urgot is in desperate need of a rework to make him relevant again. Every once in a while, when the tank meta comes on too strong, you may see him make a reappearance, providing armor reduction for the rest of his team, but generally he’s an inconsequential pick. Don’t get me wrong, he’s fun to play and there are some players who are very good with him and useful. Unfortunately, they are a small minority and he has an abysmal win rate. So just the sight of him on your team usually sends your teammates into rage spirals before the game can even begin. If for nothing else, he needs a rework as an excuse to replace that Giant Enemy Crabgot splash art. Why Riot still has official art up of a big cyborg crab monster kidnapping a scantily clad girl is a mystery to me.

13 Twitch

(via nbcnewyork.com)

Our first example on this list of a champion "that is always Wood V when on my team, but Diamond level when I face them." He is very frustrating to play against, especially for those new to the [https://Www.Mobanewshub.com/ MOBA Game Updates]. For new players who have yet to get a hang of looking at their mini-map, having an invisible character walk up to them and open fire can be very frustrating. League of Legends requires players to be skilled at their champion and to understand the threat level of every other champion in the game. Well, Twitch is one of the hardest to understand. Especially since his ultimate has a small visual cue change, but suddenly your entire team is being shredded. Then there is the fact that it will feel like when he is on your team, he will always pick the worst moments to come out of invisibility and you have to scramble to try to peel the enemy team off him.

12 Ryze

(via elohell.net)

While the recent rework for Ryze has made him a lot less "point and clicky," it is still frustrating that he gets to unilaterally decide to snare you. Almost every other champion with a snare that long requires them to land the spell on you. In turn, you have to have failed to dodge that spell, so theirs is more of an inward feeling of frustration when it happens. However, against Ryze, you know there’s nothing you can do, at some point when fighting him, he will decide you’re not allowed to move and you have to like it. Still, at least his damage all comes from skill shots, so overall the rework made him less frustrating to play against. Why is he still on this list then? Well the rework made him more frustrating to play with. His ultimate now transports his own teammates to a location of his choosing. A single poor choice has sent many a team into a toxic, in-fighting spiral.

11 Tahm Kench

(via surrenderat20.net)

With yet another character with the ability to transport his teammates, you may start to see a pattern develop. While Tahm Kench’s ultimate ability works a lot like Ryze’s, except for a maximum of one other ally, it’s not his ultimate that puts him higher on this list. It’s mostly that he can ingest an ally and run around with them before spitting them back out. While this can be a very helpful mechanic to a team and many a champion’s life has been saved by it, it can also be a tool for great evil. Pro-tip, don’t be toxic to a Tahm on your team. They have too much power over you, should you tilt them. A Tahm Kench who has abandoned trying to win can actively decide how your game will play out as well. You shouldn’t rage against your own team anyway, but at the very least, keep the Kench happy.

10 Bard

(via surrenderat20.net)

Finally, the last entry in the epic trilogy of the League Transporters, Bard. The worst of the trio, for the simple reason that the enemy team can also use his Magical Journey portal. It can act as a great trap, using himself as bait, to lure unsuspecting enemies straight to Bard’s waiting allies. However, sometimes the portals are created out of panic, as Bard tries to escape the clutches of death. If not properly coordinated, all Bard accomplishes is the equivalent of the drowning person who pulls down those around them. To top it all off, there is his ultimate, designating anything in an area invulnerable and unable to move for a couple seconds. While useful to lock down a fleeing enemy, giving time for your team to catch up, it often backfires and only locks down his pursuing allies, allowing the enemy to escape. In addition, look at his face, so lovable and peaceful… he doesn’t belong in League of Legends .

9 Blitzcrank

(via letemps.ch)

The scourge of low elo games, Bltizcrank. As previously mentioned, a difficult thing for new players (and the hard-headed old players) is to properly assess threat level. There is a certain understanding of what an enemy champion can do to you that is only achieved after they have burned you often enough for you to learn your lesson. Blitzcrank is one of the first lessons every League player learns. His mechanic is simple, as he aims in a straight line, and brings the first thing he hits to him. Everything in his kit is designed to set up that pull and lock down whatever he hits. He requires opposing players to be aware of their own positioning, something that does not come naturally to most. Be prepared to learn your lesson the hard way. Then, once you’ve gained enough experience and familiarity with the game, be prepared to face Blitzcrank mains who have also improved and play a game of rock, paper, scissors as they predict in which direction you’ll attempt to dodge.

8 Warwick

(via memeguy.com)

Thank you Riot and all that is good above for finally making Warwick’s ultimate a skill shot. There was nothing more obnoxious than when he was able to unilaterally decide: you’re not allowed to play, you are going to take a bunch of damage, I am going to gain a lot of health, and you will like everything about this. He is still very much built around that decision, but at least you have a chance of dodging it. Though that is easier said than done, because unless he completely messes up, the only way you will dodge his ultimate is with your flash and you only get one of those every five minutes. He still has an obnoxious amount of life steal, especially when low health.

7 Talon

(via riftherald.com)

Talon can be very strong, but I think he is well balanced overall within the game. The frustrating thing is that damn ability to parkour. Walls are no obstacle to the man, making chasing him a fool’s endeavor. Even if you somehow catch up to him, the expenditure of time and effort negates the gain of putting him down. One of the barriers that keeps lower elo players from advancing is the inability to capitalize after winning a team fight. Talon exploits those inabilities. He may be the last person left alive, with little health, on his team, but he is so hated, that instead of putting pressure on objectives to win the game, the enemy team will chase him through his jungle gym. Seen here in his premium monkey skin, Talon wastes the enemy team’s time.

6 Yasuo

(via leagueoflegends.com)

Just over halfway through the list, we meet our first entry with a "carry everyone else" complex. When you face against Yasuo, it is frustrating because he can almost single-handily destroy your team. Yet, the more frustrating aspect is when a player on your team criticizes you and expects everything you do to be in service of them and their ability to carry you. When an ally adopts the attitude that you are nothing but dead weight for them to carry, it is not surprising that team morale plummets. This is the main reason that the community criticizes Riot when certain champions are unbalanced to the rest. It is not only because it is frustrating to play against something that has a stronger design, it is also because it fosters independence within a team game. Ideally, victory should only be achieved through teamwork. When certain players are able to win while being selfish, it legitimizes and propagates that behavior.

5 Zed

(via aminoapps.com)

Next on the list of champions with a "carry everyone else complex" is Zed. While being mechanically challenging, his overall strategy is pretty simple. He picks a single target, goes all in to kill them, and then blinks back to where it all started. I think this mix is what makes having a Zed on your team so frustrating. Most Zed’s you will play with think that because they can understand the strategy, they are skilled enough to follow up with the mechanics. This is rarely the case, which leads to many Zed players falling behind over the course of the game. This only exasperates the problem, because as they become relatively weaker to enemies and less able to play their assassin role, they will fail more often in their attempts to carry everyone else. It is still a team game and even the assassin characters have to learn to coordinate with their teammates.

4 Riven

(via mobafire.com)

The queen of the "carry everyone else" complex, Riven. With countless 1 vs 5 montages on YouTube, Riven spits on the concept of team games. While she remains unbalanced (why she has the only shield in the game that scales with attack damage is a mystery to everyone), she does still require a mechanical mastery and quick reflexes. That fact is probably what makes her so detrimental to League of Legends as an overall game. Many pro-players and streamers have mastered those mechanics and pull off amazing individual feats. This means that there are exponentially more players, after having watched the pros, who believe they are just as capable to replicate it. The game already has a toxic community from players’ inability to get along. You throw in an outlet for selfish players and the problem is only made worse.

3 Shaco

(via deviantart.com)

Shaco is, by far, the most annoying champion in all of League of Legends . He can go invisible and jump a distance with the same move. He can throw daggers that slow you. He does more damage to you when your back is turned to him. He places invisible jack-in-the-box traps that fear your character, laugh and damage you. His ultimate ability creates a clone that he can independently control. All the while, he constantly laughs as he executes his abilities. Again, like Teemo, he doesn’t synergize well with other champions on his team. His main contribution is that he can tilt the opposing team and throw them off their rhythm, but if they keep their composure, he becomes a non-factor in the late-game. Just pray to never face him in Ultra Rapid Fire, where his annoyance is on negligible cooldown.

2 The Players

(via candydirectnews.com)

Yes you, you’re the worst. You, the person next to you, everyone in your game, and me. We are all the worst and wildly hated characters in League of Legends . Even though I try to be very constructive and avoid getting into shouting matches, because this is a team game after all, I know I’m hated because I’m constantly told so. If I say something like, "it’s okay, play under turret, I’ll gank after backing, and we’ll win this in the late game." The answer I usually get is, "**** you, you suck, no gank, ff" (or a variation of that, usually there are many more spelling errors). There are no lack of examples from everyone’s personal experiences. If you don’t play League and would like to see how bad it is, check out Disco Heat’s YouTube channel and his series, League of Children . Particularly, his one-off playlist after episode 10. He just rips those videos straight from other streamers. He does not edit them, he does not punch them up, it is just raw footage of people flaming while playing the game. Remember, these videos showcase players when they know there is a camera on them live streaming. I can only imagine how bad they can get off-camera.

1 Amumu

(via rebrn.com)

No one likes him, he doesn’t have any friends. Do you even read the lore?

This has been a great week for Resident Evil fans. Digital games research company SuperData let the cat out of the bag about the next Resident Evil [https://WWW.Mobanewshub.com/ MOBA game Beginner guide] , which according to them is set to release this fall. At the same time, the research firm also inadvertently confirmed Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 .

We also received confirmation this week from NetherRealm Studios that long-time Mortal Kombat veteral Liu Kang will be joining the Mortal Kombat X roster. With just a few weeks left until release, the Mortal Kombat developer is releasing information at a rapid rate, so we're sure to see even more reveals and rumors hit the streets soon.

While we've been discussing Liu Kang, Resident Evil and a new speedrun record for Fallout 3 , here are a few other stories from the week we wanted to mention.

-

In the next update for Halo: The Master Chief Collection , developer 343 Industries will be addressing a handful of issues with the game, including improvements to multiplayer ranking. Ranks will be available for additional playlists, and the team is also said to be working on new penalties for quitting and betrayals.

Improving the ranking system, as well as introducing new penalties should go a long way to improve the Master Chief Collection ’s current situation . Even though the game plays much better than it did at launch, there are some issues that still need to be resolved before the game is ready for a major tournament, which we expect to happen after the success of the game’s Championship series .

-

[HTML1]

Last month, word broke that Microsoft had canceled a reboot of Phantom Dust , which was being developed by Darkside Games. The reboot was meant to revive the cult classic from the original Xbox, and while Darkside Games is no longer working on it, Microsoft says it still plans to release the game at some point for Xbox One. Microsoft didn’t provide a reason for cancelling the project, or when they envision the game will release.

Phantom Dust is one of the many games being rebooted or remastered for current-gen consoles. With the lack of backwards compatibility on the devices, and the inability for players to outright purchase classic games like they could on last-gen consoles, it seems reboots and remasters will continue to grow in popularity. Hopefully, for Phantom Dust fans, there’s still hope the game will make its way to the Xbox One.

Source: YouTube

-

After being named the Game of the Year at the 2015 [https://WWW.Mobanewshub.com/ MOBA game tier list] Developers Conference, it looks like Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor may be getting a Game of the Year edition. While there’s not yet any official word on the edition, Warner Bros. did submit the game for a Game of the Year classification to the Australian Classification Board.

We wouldn’t be surprised to see the Shadow of Mordor receive a Game of the Year edition, especially considering the strong reviews it received from both critics and gamers. We at Game Rant gave the game a 4.5 out of 5 .

Considering the game is only six months old, we would expect a Game of the Year edition to surface sometime in the fall, or possibly next Spring, given the plethora of new games planned for later this year. Whenever it’s released, though, we have no doubt Shadow of Mordor [https://WWW.Mobanewshub.com/ MOBA game events] of the Year edition will sell well among gamers.

Source: Twitter

-

Broken Age Act 2 will be released in the U.S. on April 28, 2015, and April 29 in Europe. According to developer Double Fine Productions, Act 2 will be free to any PC gamers who already own Act 1 . For those looking to purchase both acts, the game will be available as a single purchase for $24.99. The full game will also be available soon for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

The independent game has received strong support among gamers and shows that the point-and-click genre is still alive and kicking. In fact, independent games of all genres continue to receive positive reviews and make strong sales among gamers, showing that it doesn’t take a huge team and millions of dollars in ads to make a game successful. And thanks to services like Steam Green Light and Kickstarter, independent developers are able to create buzz for their games on a tight budget.

We look forward to playing the second act of Broken Age and will have a review available shortly after it launches. In the meantime, check out our review of Broken Age Act 1 .

-

[HTML2]

Developer Wales Interactive has announced their first-person parkour and shooting game, Infinity Runner , will be making its way to Xbox One. The fast-paced linear game has found success on Steam, and will likely be available for Xbox One owners before the end of the year.

After the success of Dying Light ’s parkour action adventure, we have no doubt Infinity Runner will do well on the Xbox console. The above video shows the game is fast-paced, with various obstacles and enemies to overcome as players sprint through 14 levels in an attempt to escape a spaceship.

We’ll be interested to see if Wales Interactive releases the game during the fall, when we expect many major titles to launch, or if the developer will opt for a release date when things are a little quieter.

Source: Wales Interactive

-

Dota 2 is by far one of the most popular games to both play and watch. The game has a constant and high following on services like Twitch and YouTube , and has seen impressive attendance at past tournaments. Tickets for the upcoming Dota 2 tournament went on sale this week, but weren’t available long. In fact, despite the $99 price tag, the first round of tickets sold out in just six minutes. The second round of ticket sales beat the first round, selling out in an impressive four minutes.

The speed by which the tickets sold out is definitely a strong indicator that the eSports industry is alive and well. With viewers of tournaments growing alongside the award money, we’re sure this is still only the beginning of eSports. The prize pool for the previous Dota 2 International tournament, for instance, reached $11 million. Esports is definitely here to stay.

Stay tuned to Game Rant for the latest in video game news.

A trend has risen over the last few years; one where Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas (MOBAs) are taking over a huge portion of gaming culture. Now, stadiums are filled with fans of the genre, and its celebrities are treated like sports stars. The two most popular MOBAs, League of Legends and Dota 2 , are direct competitors, based on the same custom game mod, 'Defense of the Ancients.'

Though they have many thematic similarities, there are a plethora of differences between the two. This creates a wide contrast in the user's experience. And, it's difficult to say whether their different qualities truly constitute strengths or weaknesses. This is particularly important to remember when the fundamental differences between these games were formed with intentional design philosophies in mind.

While League may be quicker and flashier, Dota 2 is a little more complicated, keeping many more facets from the original Dota . Yet, these qualities also continue to speak to their differing levels of success. In short, perhaps sales are the only way to substantiate the claim that a simpler, flashier game is better.

15 Better: League Is More Popular

lolesports.com

One of the biggest points in favor of League of Legends is the huge viewership it tows; it boasts #1 among online games. By the Fall of 2016, Riot reported over 100 million unique players will play League in a given month. Meanwhile, within the same season, Dota 2 averaged a fraction of that, with about 13 million unique players in any given month. Not everyone has to be a player to enjoy the League franchise. The League of Legends 2016 World Championship had over 43 million unique viewers. Dota 2 impressively reached about half of that, at over 20 million unique viewers.

In many social situations, it isn't hard to find a fellow League player. Riot even knows it created a social game, and the client allows players to add friends off of social media accounts. But, does popularity necessarily equate to a product being better? Many of League's other qualities are merits contingent on this first virtue.

14 Worse: Dota 2 Does It First

blog.cyberpowerpc.com

Any Dota 2 player might remember the feeling of seeing League 's champion roster and saying, "Wait, I know these heroes..." Sure, both games will obviously draw from the original source material in Warcraft III . And with similar fantasy elements, there's bound to be a magic archer, a knight, and a barbarian. There will be a fishperson and a dragon. Yet despite this, Dota 2 players are even recognizing similar skills that are being rehashed into League champions. Well, it's hard to deny some of the uncanny similarities, but League never claimed to be original.

As League champions are remade, and the Summoner's Rift map is completely refurbished, the game is moving away from the cartoon-like aesthetic of its earlier years. The game is also becoming more dynamic, as it adds in a wider array of items with kit-changing abilities. But... many of these changes go in the same direction that Dota 2 already had, despite League having a headstart. It's important to remember that Dota 2 ended its open beta in 2013, four years after League did. This makes it all the more shocking that Dota 2 had features like its practice mode long before League .

13 Better: League Is Shorter

leagueoflegends.com

League of Legends has a heavy focus on the gameplay during skirmishes. That is, the team vs. team fights have a huge effect on the way the game progresses. These 'team fights' are large indicators for which side will win the game, and which player will carry the team to victory. So, the winners get stronger and keep winning. Under League 's current power balance, it's fairly doable for a mechanically-skilled player to dominate a game in under half an hour. If the enemy team is disheartened enough, they can surrender as early as twenty minutes into the game.

Meanwhile, Dota 2 matches can average around 50 minutes per match. A huge complaint among the Dota 2 community is the inability to concede a match. However, comebacks are much more common in these matches . Many of the game's most amazing turnarounds could never have happened if Valve had allowed the implementation of a surrender option,

12 Worse: Dota 2 Heroes Are All Free

pcwallart.com

I was floored when I first launched Dota 2. The game now boasts a character roster of 113 heroes, all immediately available for the player's first match. It's a shining light of hope for completionists everywhere. There may be fair protestations against giving every newbie Invoker and Meepo. But while it's a little overwhelming, it's ultimately rewarding if a gamer takes the time to learn every hero.

On the other side of the hill, League of Legends has a weekly rotation of free champs. This staple is prominent in most other games within the genre. Characters can be bought by grinding in-game currency, but the rates are ludicrous. By playing for the 'First Win of the Day' bonus once a day (and winning each game) it takes over twenty games to save up enough points for a new champion. Anyone that simply doesn't have that kind of time on their hands might opt to wait for the champion to be on sale for under five dollars.

11 Better: League Is Simpler

6kart.deviantart.com

When playing Dota 2 , it may be immediately overwhelming, and not just because of the full character roster. Many mechanics that don't exist in League are crucial to Dota 2 gameplay; like the courier used to deliver items. A significant part of both games is the process of farming experience and gold by killing enemy minions. But League removes the ability to 'deny' farm, the act of destroying allied minions before an enemy player can.

The design philosophy for League of Legends seems to intend to streamline the [https://Mobanewshub.com/ moba Comprehensive Site] experience. This might be evident with another game-changing mechanic in Dota 2 , turn rates. Heroes take time when turning to face a different direction; while in League , changing direction is nearly instant. This makes fighting (or running) a bigger and riskier investment. Perhaps things like denying, couriers, and turn rates are too much work. But what Dota 2 boasts is its faithfulness to its roots.

10 Worse: Dota 2 Games Are More Unique

cryotube.deviantart.com

In every match, League of Legends places its players into one of five roles; Top, Mid, Jungler, AD Carry, and Support. Typically, champions fit into only one of these roles, and have little wiggle room outside of them. Much of the variety lies in the differences between them; a support that heals vs. a support that disables. In tandem with this, the equipment that champions buy generally serve to focus a character further into its roles. I.e: A heavy damage-dealer builds more damage. This —and the heavy focus on teamplay— make for fairly predictable games.

On the flipside, Dota 2 attempts to diversify its heroes' roles. It's a lot more feasible for a Dota 2 hero to begin as a support, but to finish the game as the one carrying the game. The heroes are grouped into three categories; Agility, Strength, and Intelligence. However, in and out of the same category, the heroes are vastly different from each other, some being extremely unique. Rubick can steal abilities. Invoker has ten spells. At the same time, equipment purchases are a lot less restrained. Any hero can buy Aghanim's Scepter or a Blink Dagger. These choices allow for novel matches to happen fairly often.

9 Better: League Is Easier

bradwhitlam.artstation.com

It's difficult to deny that Dota 2 really punishes its players' mistakes. Deaths cause a player to drop gold. At max level, a hero might have to wait almost two minutes before respawning. Meanwhile, a maxed champion in League might despair at their misfortune with only half that. Dota 2 also punishes the improper use of skills. One wrong move, and the enemy team might capitalize on the incredibly long cooldown timers. While in League , the skills a much lower in impact, and an ability might run through its cooldown before the next fight. This is especially true later in the game, as the lengths of most cooldown decrease with every rank.

So, it's true, there are many ways League is easier. Dota 2 has its tedious recipe system and a risky hidden shop. Meanwhile, League gives shortcuts to every player, like using 'Recall' to quickly return to base. Dota 2 heroes can pull out entirely unexpected moves, while League champions generally do the same things. These qualities aren't only for simplicity's sake, League of Legends is just more newbie-friendly.

8 Worse: Dota 2 Isn't Struggling With Lore

dota2.com

Many still remember the days of the 'Journal of Justice,' the in-universe newspaper within League of Legends. Now, League 's lore is left in shambles as a massive overhaul has retconned many champions' backstories. There are updates to repair this from time-to-time. For instance, now Wukong, Ahri, and Rengar have become Vastayans. Still, without a clear framing narrative it's no longer clear whether or not League players are even supposed to be 'Summoners' anymore.

Dota 2 's lore is a little more complete. Heroes are called forth in the eternal war between the Dire and the Radiant. The game fills each hero with vocal cues to further expand their character. A player can witness Rylai's crush on Sven in-game if they are allied together. Dota 2 would bring comics to the fray. Meanwhile, League continues to experiment with various interactive (over-produced) promos. I miss the now-discarded 'League Judgment' where champions earned entrance into the League through a trial. Little did either MOBA realize, was that all the fans wanted was a little more continuity.

7 Better: League Is Sleeker

reddit.com

While Dota 2 expands its heroes through voice lines, League expands its characters through design. League takes a core concept (falconer ranger, ice witch, fat fishman) and builds the champion's skills, lore, and visual design around sharpening the focus on that concept. League 's champions end up looking cohesive (albeit a bit shallow). This is in direct contrast to Dota 2 's heroes that end up looking like they were made haphazardly for a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. At the very least, Riot now claims that it's trying to move away from making hourglass women.

League of Legends also isn't afraid to update its user interface and launcher. As a result, the improved chat client and in-game HUD retains a minimalist charm. With every update, the inventory continues to shrink. Improvements to the game's sleekness are not only intended to be for aesthetic reasons, but also practical ones. In an update not too far in the past, timers were implemented at the top of the screen to denote how long until jungle monsters respawn, making the game a lot easier on players that timed it themselves.

6 Worse: Dota 2 Has A Better Community

esportsonly.com

In truth, both the League of Legends and Dota 2 communities are their own complaint-filled circles of Hell. But, Dota 2 is just a little bit higher up. This is surprising, since Dota 2 's voice feature allows mentally unstable children to scream in your ear. League of Legends players need to use 3rd-party chat programs/sites in order to hear each other complain in different languages. Otherwise, they stop to type whenever they are irked (which is often).

Both games are rife with a myriad of ways of griefing teammates, and it is done so regularly. The two games do attempt to dampen the spread of remarks that are too homophobic or racist (with penalties like being placed into lower priority queue). When thoroughly miffed, many players resort to 'feeding,' the act of dying to the enemy team on purpose to give them gold. To win games, some players even resort to 'swatting,' the act of making up a violent crime in order to goad a SWAT team to the streamer's home.

5 Better: League Doesn't Give You A Clean Slate

http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com

League of Legends allows for small tweaks to the player's experience with their champion. The rune system (soon to be revamped and replaced) allows champions to begin the game with small stat boosts. By taking masteries, a champion receives gradual increases to their effectiveness, sometimes in the form of unique passive abilities to structure one's gameplay around.

By contrast, at the beginning of every Dota 2 match, the player starts with a clean slate. The only thing that carries over from previous matches is the player. League champions can start out with a core direction already built, perhaps taking attack runes and offensive masteries. But in Dota 2, similar traits can only be gained in-game. When a hero levels up, they can choose to rank up 'talents' rather than skills. These bonuses are unique to each hero, often offering players distinct, permanent choices.

4 Worse: Dota 2 Pays Better

esports.yahoo.com

Numbers don't lie; no League of Legends players can boast becoming millionaires (they do have to split the prize money). But two League players, Faker and Bengi, managed to make it into the top 50 making about $900 thousand and $800 thousand in tournament winnings respectively. Meanwhile, all of the other names on the top 50 highest-paid gamers made their fortune through Dota 2 .

This isn't surprising. The 2016 League of Legends World Championships had a prize pool of about $5 million. But in comparison, the 2016 Dota 2 International broke its own record for the biggest prize pools in eSports with an over $20 million in prize money. The first place team, Wings Gaming, took home $9 million to split between them.

3 Better: League Updates All The Time

surrenderat20.net

Perhaps it isn't fair to paint Dota 2 as the more stable MOBA. Many players note that Valve isn't afraid to make drastic changes to kits, seemingly just to mix it up, with wide-reaching patches. By contrast, League 's patches are fairly stable with constant nudges to balance power away from abusive changes.

Sometimes the changes are bigger. League of Legends regularly reworks and retools its champions. Some reworks are only visual updates, while others are huge overhauls to the champion's kit. However, Riot's reworking team is always aiming to focus a champion into its niche with every update an improvement on an outdated champion.

2 Worse: Dota 2 Manages Premium Content Better

imgur.com

League of Legends allows the player to customize their champion by allowing them to use different skins or chromas (recolored skins). These skins were originally exclusively available with IRL currency up until recently. Now, players can find chests and key fragments after a game. The crafting option is extremely clumsy and requires a lot of different pieces, but it's a huge advancement from before.

Dota 2 takes a different approach. Valve has a huge array of cosmetic options to personalize the player's experience. They can be dropped at the end of matches, traded, or wagered. Every hero can change each individual piece of their wardrobe. Players can design their own pieces of equipment. Garments can have their names changed, and items can even be socketed with gems that display signatures or statistics. Maybe League of Legends will allow its players to change the look of their wards, but Dota 2 has this and more; with changeable announcers, taunts, and music, to name a few of its customization options.

1 Better: League Is A Business

leagueoflegends.com

Despite its success, Valve doesn't seem to have as profitable of a business model as Riot. Comparing the two is like having a tech company compete with three unpaid men in a basement. Now normally, fans would rather thoroughly milk a cheaper game, but Riot somehow constantly pulls in its audience with shiny new changes. Fans sometimes forget that when a business succeeds, it performs better. More money goes into focus groups and reworking teams. So at the very least, a portion of Riots riches actually go into improving parts of the game that need to be fixed.

Not only will League fans find old champions and items have been remade to fit the present-day theme of the game, but they'll also constantly get teased by new champions and skins. While Valve might allow a fan-made cosmetic item, Riot controls and creates all of its skins, which keeps the game more thematically cohesive. League follows patterns; if a skin has been used (and is met with some success) then Riot is bound to make more of it. And now, I'm tempted to spend money every time a new skin comes out from the PROJECT line or the Blood Moon theme.
